When it comes to internet services in Nigeria, there are quite a lot of providers apart from just the telecommunication companies. Due to the growth of smartphones and high tech laptops and devices, there is also a growing need and market for WiFi services.

WiFi services are wireless internet services that allow subscribers to connect to the internet without the need for cables or a USB devices. They come as short range networks(about 10 ft range) that allow any device with a network card to connect and start using services available on that network.

There are 2 kinds of WiFi services which are Public and private WiFi. The public WiFi services are normally available at public places like religious centers, business centers, shopping mall,s schools and so on. Public WiFi services can be provided for free or for commercial purposes and would normally be accessed to by the public. Private WiFi services are those which are meant for private use and can be purchased and used at home by individuals who mostly pay a fee for it.

To connect to a WiFi network, users may need to have a network password and user account to access it. Some Wifi networks may however be open for all to access it.

The cost of using Wifi internet service in Nigeria is normally borne by the provider and this may then be charged to the subscribers on a time or data used basis.

I've been able to use a couple of Wifi internet services in Lagos Nigeria and these are what it cost me as a subscriber:

MTN Hynet: A data based private Wifi service cost me about N4000($25) for 3GB with a validity period of 30 days.

Oxygen WiFi: A public Wifi service that requires user registration. This cost me about N250($1.5) for 3hrs with a validity period of 3 days.

There are also other Mobile WiFi services offered by GSM companies in Nigeria and these are their prices:

MTN Mifi : N21000 with 3gb for 1 month
Etisalat mifi: N20,000 6gb for 1 year
Glo mifi: N20,000 with free 12gb for 1 year
Airtel mifi: N23900 with free 5gb 1 month

Have you used any Wifi internet service in Nigeria? How much did it cost you as a subscriber?

The start up fee includes a monthly subscription fee for up to 6months or a year. You can call their office to confirm and it also seems they've reduced it to just N15,000 last time I checked. The N15,000 now includes a free modem and 6GB of internet data.

Men. that's the way we see it o. These internet companies charge us too much and yet their service comes with a limited data cap. The few ones that offer unlimited downloads packup within months.
